gearbox upgrade?
« on: 25 January 2008, 18:58 »
i'm looking for a 5 speed gearbox to go on a 1990 1.3 4 speed. i havn't been able to find the gearbox code yet but i'm having a look at the weekend. also what else will i need to swap, will i need to get the gear linkage and would i need to get a clutch that fits the 5 speed or would the original fit? oh yeah and i'll probably get the 5 speed gear knob might be an idea.

i think the 1.3 ryder has a five speed does anybody know the code?

cheers

nice one mate thanks for the pictures, 60 quid int bad at all! so: 5 speed box (085), 5 speed mount, and the gearlinkage + the gear nob. sorted i'm goin down to the scrappy tomorrow to have a look for an electric window kit so i'll enquire then.

oh yeah and what ratio is your speedo, i suppose best bet is to get the speedo that went with the box? i've got 2 speedos one in the car is 1505 and i've got a 1705 will any of these work?

Also will any gearbox thats an 085 work, i'm not sure but is 085 the housing code and is there a sub/extra code next to that to match up with the gear ratios if so whats the extra part number that i need to give him, which do would i get if he offers me a choice (unlikly but hey)? if i'm making it up talking waffle just laugh

sorry about all the questions but the guy at the scrappy tried to con my mate once because he didn't know enough about the part he needed, so i'm trying to make sure i know what i want!

cheers

does the 1705 hav a clock or rev counter on it if so this might be from a 1.6-1.8's and gti'. the 5 speed looks very similar to the 4 speed just make sure u r getting it off a 1.3 not 1.6/1.8 but u shud be able to tell the difference between the two engines by the looking at the airbox (1.3 is round amd 1.6/1.8 is square) and the engines sit differently in the engine bay (1.3 leans forward and 1.6/1.8 leans backwards).

ok cheers, i know the gearbox is an 085 but is this refering to the size of the housing and spline sizes and is there another bit like AUG that can be used to define the gear ratios because i'm wondering if there is a choice as to what i get? do you know if the 5th gear is like an overdrive gear and the other gears are the same ratios or is the whole lot different? i'm just wondering what would give the best acceleration and/or top speed? cheers

its probably just the case code and im not sure on the ratios as mine is still sitting in the shed but they are probably similar probably 5th gear being the economy gear for motorways
