4 1/2 hrs to my first GTI test drive!!!!

Well the day has finally arrived where i get to test drive the manual & DSG GTI's to see what i will go for.

I will be buying a used example approx 05 or 55 plate so is there anything i should be looking for in particular?

I remember when i test drove the DSG - the guy told me to clsoe my eyes and try spot the gear changes by the sound/lag.......not sure how many other salesmen would recommend that someone close their eyes whilst driving but heyho

Secondhand the option costs peanut over the manual too - double bonus

DSG for me ... this is the future for all cars ....unbelievably smooth & quick gear changes and so so versatile - Drive, Sport Mode, Paddles etc..
The only worry for me would be DSG repair costs when out of warranty if you're getting an older car.

Common problems I've heard of are :

Wind Noise from Wing mirrors / door seals (especially on earlier cars)
Front Doors dropping slightly (in alignment)
Creaking Steering Racks on full lock at low speed.
Erratic rear wiper motors
"Milky worms" on 18" Monza Alloys (under the lacquer)
DV Diaphragms splitting (especially on chipped GTi's) - give it full beans in 3rd and change up to 4th and have a good listen  !
Ask whether it's been chipped or not
I'm sure there's a few more, but nothing really common or major !

Also check full history and whether it's an import or not

WOW what a car
Was genuinely surprised on how fast the car felt.  had a good 40min drive with plenty of traffic, dual carriage and a couple of round-abouts, i was surprised to find so much understeer with ESP on, after the drive i had a look at the tyres and all 4 were odd and were budget brands (i hate this)

So, manual or DSG...... still none to wiser, both were so good.  I think that i will be happy with either although i will need to ask some more questions about the life of the 2 clutches and the cost of replacement.  Other than that, awesome car!!!!!

I did the same.  Steel Grey looks fantastic!  The wait for my car to be built is the longest wait of my life!  Argghhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!
