replacing front windscreen
« on: 22 January 2008, 17:08 »
i know this has been covered before and i have used the search function.

I was just wondering if there was any kind of adhesive needed to fit a front screen as this hasnt been mentioned on any previous threads. some people have siad to use some kinda silicone lube to help it slide in easier....therefore an adhesive wouldnt set properly anyway?

Or is the seal the only thing holding the screen in its place?

if i were to get it replaced professionally by autoglass, RAC etc etc would they use any kind of adhesive?

i asked vw the same thing you dont need any adhesive if the metalwork is sound, if her eis rust, that needs sorting first. I think auto screens would probably use sealent to stop you coming back! I have never had a problem with them leaking with a new seal, touch wood, and i have replaced about 5 seals on various mark 2s i have owned! thats where ma money goes!
i must buy a new car!

When autoglass did mine... Old out, new in... No sealant required!

As has been said, no sealant required. Even if it was only just to help the screen pop in it would be a waste of time as that is a piece of piss with the old washing line trick

G60 screens are bonded in though i do believe but that is irrelevant!

I paid a guy who works for a windscreen place £30 (in his hip pocket) quid to replace my windscreen. what a waste of money. It looked like a total piece of piss. I'll be doing it in future.

Hi Guys, I work for Autoglass!!!!!! Changing the front screen is a piss of piss on the mk2 Just use string andd lubricant, On a customers car we would some times use a sealent called arbourmast But golfs rarely leak I changed my own screen for a brand new one with a sunstrip and I did not use sealent! It dont leak! G60 screens were indeed bonded in though I still have not found out why? S

I would guess G60's are bonded as it adds to the structural rigidity of the car. This is why modern cars have bonded screens. A cracked windscreen in a brand new astra can make quite a difference if you roll it apparently.
