testing regulator flap

reading bentley concerning testing the lower regulator flap in the lower air filter housing.. too quote...' Apply vacuum to the disconnected vacuum hose and check that the flap moves smoothly. If the regulator flap mechanism is faulty, the lower air filter housing should be replaced.'..i assume this means i just blow into the hose..i've tried this and i can't get it to move..(and no..i'm no breathless wimp)!...anyone tried this test? hoe much vacuum should it need to move?

I would post more details about your car (year, 8v or 16v etc.)

To apply vacuum you need to suck on the pipe, you can blow down it all you like but nothing is gonna happen, at least that's what I said to the missus last night :grin:


You got any pics of your dad's split ?

Yeah as above ^^^ you need to suck on the removed vacuum line not blow down it.
If you suck on it then block the end with your tongue then suck some more etc it should be pretty easy to get the flap to move.

I don't think a semi will give the same results

Shouldn't make any odds really, supposed to help the cold start by sucking hot air from the manifold but i ran a 57i kit (no airbox) for a year with no problems starting at any temp the yorkshire dales could throw at me.

mine has no air feed from the manifold anyway, guess it was removed when the 4 branch went on...

likewise, no problems starting.... ever!! *touch wood*

yeah same here, my flap hasn't been in use since the 2.0 bottom end went in, made no difference whatsoever!  Itsd only there to make the engine warm up a bit quicker on GTI models anyway.
