GTI in snow...
« on: 21 January 2008, 22:39 »
Today we got hit by snow... and lots of it.

The ED30, to be frank was not good... not by any close measure... it was dreadful.

I'm well experienced in driving in snow and I would say that it was not exactly competent, compared to other cars I've had ( of a similar type).

I know its got big wheels... and a big engine, but it just lacked basic traction... with or without traction control it was like bambi... or a BMW...!!!!

I had to abandon the car 1/2 mile from home in an industrial estate and walk the rest as I got to a hill it couldn't climb.  Its now at home once the roads cleared a little, but its a little disconcerting to say the least.

ED 30 ... Best car I've had yet.....

3 door Steel Grey ED 30 GTI rear tints, IPOD connection, parking sensors, Lux pack 1, auto dip/fold mirrors...

Did you try switching esp off and starting off in second (or even third :-) gear?

Yeah... ESP was the first thing to go... 2nd or 3rd gear was the next tried.

The issues wernt ice... it was the inches of wet snow, which just jammed up in the tires and then they may as well be slicks!

Our roads wern't gritted or ploughed, so pretty much everything but chelsea tractors were having problems.

To be honest, its the best excuse yet to buy an R32

Those funny chelsea tractor thingies aren't much cop in snow with road tyres... the first thing you should always ask a friend who's just bought one is where they keep their offroad wheels.  I recon that an R32 will be far better in the snow than 3 tonnes of road-tyred Landy Discovery...

Surely a couple of snowchains will work wonders... or failing that, a nice warm toasty fire and a bottle of scotch (as an alternative to driving at all!)

Funny post this.

I posted it ages ago. But we had some really heavy rain down here in Cape Town and my mom went with our GTi (she hates driving the 4x4 cos its tiptronic) and I bit of mud... Seriously. It was minor. And my mom said that she ended up wheel spinning the car the whole way home.

I found it funny. She even complains that it seems the car slides a bit in the rain even with ESP on and its not the tyres.

Class car this

You know what to do!! Have a quick word with your local dealer and see what he has in stock...

I can however confirm that the R32 is not only fun in the snow but in the wet too!!! Just watch whoever in whatever get left behind as you pull away with a big smirk on your face
