Water water everywhere
« on: 20 January 2008, 19:21 »
Please save my relationship or it could be new car time

Car: MK2 GTi 3 door 1989.

Original Problem: Lots of water in car mainly in drivers side rear footwell but damp in driver footwell too. Dry in passenger side. Water is getting in when car parked up. I resealed driver door membrane and put a second sheet behind. Moved door pin so the door seals as tight as poss.

There is no water evident behind the door seal when I open the door and the bottom of the door card is dry.
There is no water dripping off the pedals, but there is an odd drip from the fusebox area (very slight, not enuff to explain puddle and why the puddle is in the rear).
Sunroof drain holes front and back clear.
Scuttle tray under bonnet not cracked.
Seak n seal used around windscreen.

Car usually parked facing uphill. So today I parked it facing downhill to see what happens.

Drove to work (whilst continually wiping windscreen and getting a damp arse) - hmmm what's that sloshing sound? hucking fell! the glovebox is absolutely full of water! There is also now very damp passenger side footwells front and rear.

There seems to be a little damp behind the passenger door seal at the front end after parking the car facing downhill (I guess a small leak from front end of door membrane that doesn't affect when parked uphill). There is alos damp and mould showing on the carpet in the passenger side front footwell next to the central console.

Lifted the bonnet and took the plastic scuttle tray off -  there is a drip coming from the blanked-off windscreen wiper hole on the near-side of the car - some of which is getting down the mesh covered air intake under the scuttle tray.

But how has the glovebox filled up?

I think I have leaks from both door membranes and/or seals, and from the fusebox area, somehow into the glovebox and left side of central console area.

Jeezus!

check your drain hole under the scuttle, on passenger side, sometimes the water doesn't drain due to incline or leaves, drops in through fan mesh and fills up the vent channels, the scuttle only stops debris getting in, not water. check your bulkhead at the back of the pedals one of the grommits may be letting some seep in so you wont get drips off the pedals, some may say check your heater matrix too, but if you not adding any water on a regular basis don't worry, you got a typical mk2 problem, good luck

Thanks mate

I'll keep at it! Just seems to be getting worse the more I do to try to sort it.

I've found a few potential leak sites, but finding the main one is like looking for a really tiny haystack in a massive pile of needles

hi mate have had similar probs myself
the water at the fuse box will probably be the bonnet release cable grommit, water runs in through this and drips on the fuse box and soaks the carpet, also check the clutch cable one too.as a quick fix put loads of grease around them.

the door membrane when it leaks leaves a little water on top of the rubber seal, the rest goes into the rear footwell on mine.
u can buy new membranes on fleabay.

on the passenger side it can leak if the blower is blocked with crap and check the heater matrix for leaks.

Have you read this thread yet ? I'm thinking Tobz's post http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=70858.0

My money is on a small hole in the scuttle area somewhere.
......now officially dubless.

Thanks for advice guys

And apologies for bringing up this tedious old topic, but I just couldn't get to the bottom of it. The glove box seemed like a new one, and I just thought the angle of dangle on parking was interesting too.

Anyway, it's soaked now and it's wet and cold. Come the summer I'll dry it out and seal everything I can and hose test it.

I read all the threads I could on it before posting, but thanks again

ii share your pain. Every mark 2 i have owned has been a b!tch for leaks, you might want to steip everything down if it still persists. tak ethe wet sound deadening out so you dont rot your floorpan. My money is on the heater intake on passenger side and could still be the windscreen seal filling glovebox, double check.
i must buy a new car!

I know it's a kinda dumb question, but it's worth checking......

Did you put the plastic back in the scuttle after you cleaned it?

I actually stuffed a hose down the drain holes in a G2 I had recently - there was masses of crap that came out!
Just because you're offended doesn't make you right.
