Piper Cams?
Kent Cams?

And who makes the best Vernier Pulleys?

Schrik cams are a better cam than both of the above

there is no real difference in pulleys, and the ended of the day its just a pulley

Be careful with your choice of cam though ...

I've no idea what engine you have, but i'm looking to replace the cam in my GTI. Any Digifant engine will not respond well to a really lairy cam as it plays havoc with the air flow through the air mass sensor and inlets.

Due to the massive overlap in the cam lobs you'll end up with fluctuating air movement in the system that it just can't cope with. As a result you'll lose massive amounts of low end power - so much so in some cases that the gain in top end can't account for the lose and you end up with something not suited to road use at all !!

Im not looking at full blown race cams ... just a fast road cam.

I was under the impression you didn't need a vernier pulley unless you'd had headwork or changed your cr  ???

Generally you don't ... but you can use a vernier to adjust the power band on any cam.

Moving the cam half a degree can result in the power either moving up or down the rev range depending on which way the cam is moved.

The best example would be on a 16v. You can use the standard cams and shift the phase they turn to gain performance. ie. Advance the exhaust cam and retard the inlet ( I think that's the right way round !).

It's a real science .... and been a while since I did it @ uni so don't quote me !!!

the reason you need verniers is for exact timing, if, for example, you have had the head skimmed at any point then the timing wont be exact it will be out half a tooth or so

vernier pulleys correct this problem

piper known as "pooper"
kent are far better something like the 1602 set up runs well on a valver, but again schrick is the superior of them both.
newman do a similar regrind to the schrick so don't forget them. all the best with your choice.

The reason you need a veriner pulley is to get the valve timing exacty correct. As suggested this can be affected by head skimming.
More importantly the cam of choice may max lift may be at 106 deg atdc (Piper PB285), where as stock is at 112 deg so a vernier is required to retard the timing to the correct place.
The Newman cams are designed to run on stock timing marks removing the real need for a veriner pulley @ £80/90.

The longer the duration the more focused the power delivery, 268 is a good road cam in a fairly standard engine. 272 is ok works better in a ported head and free flowing manifold. 276 is realy for race or rally in a big valve head with manifold etc etc Very focused power delivery. When looking a forced induction camshafts lift is needed but not too much duration, go for a 264 deg camshaft.
