Fuel question 1988 mk2 golf gti 16v
« on: 16 January 2008, 16:22 »
Ok..bloody stupid question but hey..I've not had a mk2 16v before!

What fuel would it have used out the factory? 4star or unleaded?

if its 4star what do I need to do to make it run on unleded?

if it runs on unleded how do people get on with optimax and other higher octain fules?

cheers :)

The owner manual and fuel flap says 98 ron fuel. This means super unleaded is the one to go for. I am currently half way through comparing that and normal unleaded. Slight increase in power, better idling and it appears about 4mpg more with super !!!

always run a mk2 gti on 98ron or higher...as its supposed to run on this fuel...will run on 95ron but not very well...

i currently run mine on 99ron fuel from local tesco...and its never felt better...its also about 8p cheaper than local shell or BP...and dont believe the hype that tesco/supermarket fuel is crap...maybe years ago yes...but these days just as good or better in some cases...

also if its been run on 95 ron for a while after a few tanks of 98+ron fuel you will feel difference...much smoother and will get the bhp the cars supposed to have...

enjoy ur mk2

cheers all!

I had a chat with the last owner (He had the car since 1990) and said either super or 4 star? (lrp)

I went through all the paperwork that I got with the car and noticed that it is reccomended that 97ron is used :)

Will update the fuel thread once I have run a few tanks of optimax - will take a while though!!

all vw engines sine the 70s sometime can run on unleaded, VW were ahead of the game on that one :)
16vs from the factory are timed up to work with 97+ fuel, if you run em on 95 you gotta drive very carefully otherwise they'll start pinking and damage the engine.  You can adjust the timing to allow it to run on 95ron fuel though, but obviously it wont be as quick.  If you decide to run it on 99ron, you could advance the timing a bit more to squeeze out a few more horses
