At crossroads regarding price/performance
« on: 15 January 2008, 12:00 »
To the point:

Oettinger small pack:
only software
305hp/400Nm
1150 euro

Oettinger big pack:
software
Ram Air intake
middle and end boxes (exhaust from cat)
bigger intercooler
330hp/430Nm
3350 euro (don't know if includes installation)

0-100kmh:
small: 6.2s
big: 5.9s

max speed:
small: 255kmh
big: 258kmh

in-gear performance:
no info but certainly more pronounced than diffs in 0-100 and in max

I wonder if the 25hp/30Nm are worth 2000+ euro difference in price (and maybe more if installation costs are not included)?
Do I really need a bigger intercooler?  :undecided: Do I really need Ram Air?  :undecided: Do I need another exhaust?  :undecided:

I don't do track days, I do not compete from red lights, I do not do many autobahn runs at top speed (actually, I only did it once in France, 230kmh), I quite enjoy the sound from factory exhaust (even though more would be welcomed but 2000 euro?)

Any opinions/experience?
 :undecided:

It just sounds like you got the bug!!

I'm thinking reading all these posts about remaps and other mods is tempting you to not get left behind in the ED30 club.. When really you realise there is no need to do so.

On the other hand... spending a small amount of money on occasional mods isnt exactly going to leave you feeling guilty, but will add a nice smile to your face everytime you come across another Golf and realise you can give them a whole can of whooop a$$!!

So in a nutshell I guess what i am trying to say is... why go small?? when you can go BIG!!

Think FAST!!

Looked at B&B Automobiltechnik:

Bohrung/Hub (mm) 82,5 x 92,8  82,5 x 92,8  82,5 x 92,8  82,5 x 92,8  82,5 x 92,8
Hubraum ccm 1984  1984  1984  1984  1984
Leistung (kW/PS) 169 / 230  202 / 275  224 / 305  235 / 320  243 / 330
bei U/min 6.500  6.600  6.700  6.700  6.700
Drehmoment (Nm) 300  375  400  425  435
bei U/min 2.200  2.200  2.400  2.400  2.400

Fahrleistungen
0-100 km/h (s) 6,5  6,2  5,9  5,8  5,7
0-200 km/h (s) 26,2  24,6  20,5  19,9  19,7
Vmax (km/h) 245  250  253  255  256

Elastizität 5. Gang
60-120 km/h (s) 11,5  9,5  8,9  8,6  8,4

As seen here, the biggest improvement (0-100, 0-200, 60-120) is from 230 to 305 horsepower, then improvements are marginal.

hey, i rekon go SMALL, its not like me to say this but i would not spend and extra 2000euro on 25bhp, even when you will not feel much difference, id go with softwere remap and carbonio and build up from that, i.e d.v valve and miltek

I'm in a similar dilemma!  At the moment, i don't see myself remapping the car cause 245bhp seems plentiful through the front wheels; i'm yet to be convinced about 300+ bhp (maybe i need the demo remap to see what the fuss is about!!).  I'm thinking of upgrading on a small scale - i.e. intake, exhaust, suspension, dv, maybe brakes - then maybe a remap.

Peskarik

My advice would be to see if you can get a demo remap. Do you have any other tuning companies out there apart from Oettinger?

If you can't get a demo remap then I'd go with the "basic" remap to start with. If the car feels fast enough with just the remap - you're sorted

I've found from experience that the figures you get quoted with the tuning companies regarding accelleration times and in-gear times are relatively high, compared to actual track and 1/4 mile times.

As you've probably seen on previous threads you can get under 5.7 seconds 0-60mph (96.8kph) and I have managed under 5.4 seconds 0-60 with a standing start from the side of the road in damp conditions after my remap at 285bhp .

Let us all know what you decide to do Peskarik

from my own experience, i would go for the remap only, then spend money on getting it to the tarmac ie quaife lsd. thats what iam doing anyway

agreed

If I had the money, I'd get mark IV R32 and do turbo conversion (or, more likely, I'd wait for TTS and do another remap)
