As for the service history: The car was ex-demo from VW main dealer in Southend. It had a fully stamped service history up until the point that I purchased the car.
It had done 22,000 miles when I bought the car so I asked for a service to be done before I drove it away - this is the point at which the 'VW Service Engineers' (or monkeys as I like to affectionately call them)
lost burnt destroyed ate 'misplaced' the log book.

Ive checked, the sticker is there, and I have a paper copy of the service history while I wait for a new log book to arrive, which they will then stamp up.
Its been a complete pain to sort it all out...especially as this is A: the first VW I have purchased that has cost more than £5k and B: the first VW that I have owned that is less than 4 years old!!
