Struggling to find cam..
« on: 10 January 2008, 00:00 »
Hi all, so I had bought a gti camshaft for my 1.8 driver off Ebay but the lad tried to do a runner with my money so I've had to claim it back through paypal. I've been searching everywhere for a gti cam and I can't find one! None of the local scrappies are willing to break it from a head and any on Ebay have far too much milage! (120k? No thanks..)

So where could I look for a camshaft then? Asked at the stealers while I was in and they quoted me 128 quid for a brand new one!

Oh, and I've tried asking in the Wanted here and at clubgti. No luck..

Cheers :)

Given how old Mk2's are now you will be struggling to find one with less than 100K on it. To be fair it shouldn't be a problem how many miles it has on it, it's not generally the cam that wears out.

me , why do you think over 120k is too high? if properly lubricated and torqued a cam will hit 200k with no probs at all, otherwise it would be in a high mileage service

Yeah but surely it's hit and miss as to how well looked after the engine it comes from is. Something like that you've really got to buy new imo

tbh the cams dont really wear, its the tappets that go!  cams are uber hard wearing.  I have a 170k old cam which still looks lovely

Would the mk1 camshaft actually be suitable? Don't know if it'd fit my 92 1.8 driver engine?

And I'm guessing the other one would fit? :)

Thanks

that mk1 cam prob wont fit as it has 5 bearing caps which means its probably not for hydraulic tappets.
the second one will work.
