Mk5 GTI Vs Mk4 R32
« on: 09 January 2008, 20:47 »
hi, Had a bit of a play on sunday with a Mk4 R32. To be honest he really did'nt seem to have the edge over me or was he simply not trying?!?!?! I almost thought with a bit more bottle I could have passed him at one point. Anyone shed any light on this, was he trying or not!!
Cheers
Jim

I had a "play" with a MKIV R32 last year before I had my ED30 remapped. I noticed it as it started to pull level with me on a dual carriageway and then he waved to me as he "thought" he was going to fly past. He put his foot down and so I did too. Let's just say I waved back at him as he disappeared in my rear view mirror

Now Ive had the remap - it would be like comparing a 2 litre naturally aspirated golf against the 2 litre turbo'd GTI :smug:

From what I've seen of standard MKIV R32 golfs rolling road results they actually struggle to put out their standard 237bhp. plus they are still heavier than the MKV GTI at 1477kg

MKIV R32 power to weight is around 163bhp/ton
MKV R32 power to weight is around 166bhp/ton
MKV GTI power to weight is around 151bhp/ton
MKV ED30 power to weight is around 173bhp/ton

I say "around" because the figures are based on standard outputs and not the outputs that we generally find when doing rolling roads on these cars. :nerd:

My experience was similar in that my performance expectations of the R32 were a little on the high side and when I test drove one it was a dissapointment and didn't feel that much faster than my Clio 172.

Independent figures put the MK4 R32 at 15.6 secs to 100mph with the MK5 0.1secs faster.

In gear figures for the Ed 30 vs R32 (MK4 or 5) are weighed heavily in the Ed 30's favour, this is despite the R32 being lower geared.

Subjectively a force fed engine will always feel quicker than a normally aspirated one of similar power and weight due to the hammerblow delivery but when it comes to an Edition 30 vs any R32 then the ED 30's simply are faster, both figuratively and subjectively.

Hurdy mentioned power to weight figures based on manufacturers figures, the reality is that an R32 (MK5) puts out a real 153bhp/ton whereas the Edition 30 manages over 180bhp/ton.

What the GTI or ED 30 can't match is the R32's cultured delivery or exquisite exhaust note.

Unfortunately, that is not all it can't match. It can't match R32 uphill, in wet conditions, on bad roads....
