OIL CONSUMPTION?
« on: 09 January 2008, 01:01 »
Hello people, i have a '99 golf gti 2.0 apk engine and noticed it is getting through quite a lot of oil- about 1 litre per 800-1000 miles. i've heard its a common problem with the 2.0 engine and vw say its perfectly normal? also under the filler cap is loads of yellowy sludge, which leads me to believe it is the head gasket? though haven't lost a drop of water and the engine runs fine and has done for the last 4000 miles since first noticing the sludge. there is no smoke on start up, or when driving. anyone any idea what the problem may be? cheers

The 2.0's are notorious for drinking oil so that sounds about right.  Do you do a lot of short journeys?  That could explain the mayonaise under the oil filler cap.

Sounds about sound to me too (got a 2.0 myself). As matey said, the mayo can be caused by short journeys. I get some on mine when I change my oil (offten to short runs in the morning to the train station) but as long as your not losing water and your engine is ok, your fine. Probably due to condensation is all. If you done 4000 miles and your ok, your head gasket it fine.

Cheers for the info guys.
Just to note my daily commute to and from work is around 18 miles, so wouldn't exactly say it was a short journey

Mines exactly the same mate, right down to the mayo.

Last time it was in the garage I asked them to have a check just in case it was anything like the HG but they said it was fine.  I get loads of condensation under the filler cap too, there is ALWAYS water on it that you can shake off.  My daily commute is 14 miles, about half of which is motorway.

I had my oil changed about 2 months ago and since then it's not actually used much oil at all compared to what it was like before.  More worryingly though i'm getting mayo on the dip stick now.... still not losing any water but I think it must be down to the sheer amount of condensation I get on the filler cap.  I bought a new cap but that didn't help.

I was under the impression that mayo in the dip stick was not good at all !

Sooo if my HG is on it's way out what is the most likely way it will go ?

Will it explode in a blaze of glory when i'm on the motorway or will it be a more slower degradation ?

I'm fed up of worrying about things going wrong with it now, it seems to develop some new strange noise or fault every other week !  I'm looking at getting rid in a couple of months.  Ironically I got rid of my mk3 golf because the HG was going !

it wont go as quick as that but try not to drive hard and watch out 4 any lights coming on the dash if they do get it done straight away. what engine is yours?
