Rear window Wiper broken
« on: 08 January 2008, 21:53 »
can you help,

The rear wiper wont work, the fuse is fine, the motor is fine and the water jet works but the blade wont move.  Is there a common fault with rear wipers or do i have a bigger problem?

Cheers

Did you mean the rear washer jet comes on when you try the rear wiper? If you know for certain that the motor is ok and that power is getting to the motor then you might need to try a new switch.

Personally i'd check for power to the motor then try to power it up yourself to ensure the motor is working, but a common possible fault could be the boot loom wires that come from the roof in to the boot lid may have got damaged.

If power is getting to the motor and it turns freely, then it may be the mechanism of the wiper is siezed.

The motor works, i have had it out and put it on another golf, it was fine.  When i tried it on my golf the motor didn't go, so the wiper it would suggest the wiper isn't seized.

The spray works when i push the arm on the steering wheel backwards.  Maybe part of the arm on the steering wheel isn't working, not sure, if the spray works then the switch is working, right?

The wire that leads through the boot is not damaged or buckled in any way.

I'm confused???   :undecided:

if you have power to the wiper try running a seperate earth from the plug to the boot /lock ect

I'd check if you are getting power to the rear motor with the switch activated with a multimeter, should be 12v at a guess and then if you are then check the earth has continuity to the body.

Check the pins or contacts haven't backed out of either plug or got corrosion?

This happens occasionally to mine. A good clean of the wiper relay in the fusebox and/or taking the wiper stalk off and giving it a thorough clean sorts it out for me.

Will prob need a new stalk soonish though, as I guess the copper contacts are wearing out.
