Hello! New Mk5 GTi owner with a couple of questions!
« on: 04 January 2008, 15:20 »
Hello all,

I have finally returned to a Golf GTi after a few years over at the 'dark side' (BMW).  Having formerly owned a 1.8 Mk1 GTi and 16v Mk2, I am pleased to state that I am head-over-heels in love with my Mk5!!

Especially as the very kind VW main dealer knocked a grand off the screen price (it was near the end of the month!) and fitted a set of Monza II's with new tyres when I politely demanded them!  The wheels are aftermarket replica's and I requested that they be slightly darker than the originals as I thought they would suit the Steel Grey bodywork...what does everyone think?

I also have to say, they are excellent replicas.

I have a couple of questions, one especially has been bothering me, can anyone help?

1.  Problem.  When I travelled home from the dealership (grinning like an idiot the whole way - 120 miles) I noticed that the logbook was missing, together with the stamped service history.  I called VW straight away and they said it must have been left out of the car when it was serviced before I collected it.  I was assured that it had been kept aside for me and that they would post it to me...

Two weeks later and after several angry phone calls, they eventually admitted that it has been "misplaced" and that they will give me a printed 'vehicle service history log' and order a new book.

Are there any problems with them doing this?  Im worried that I will be left with an 18 month old car with what looks like a suspect history?

2.  Due to a Spanish HGV changing lanes rather 'erratically' and me not wanting to fork out for a new front wing already, my nice brand new front near-side alloy has a small chunk taken out of it...

Would anyone be able to recommend a refurbisher in the South-East / London area that they know to be reputable / good?!?  I could use the yellow pages but would rather go for a fellow GTi-er's recommendation!

Hope to chat to you all soon!

Jim

Thanks!

I think they're quite subtle - they are still machine polished and grooved like the genuine article.  I was worried that they would look a little 'chavvy' when I ordered them (im too old for that!) but im happy with the result...apart from the newly aquired kerb damage!

They attract attention so id better paint my hubs now...18 months old and rusty hubs - cant believe it!!!!!

Make sure the service book they do for you doesn't say "Replacement" on it as I have this happen when I purchased my Octavia VRs.... And it looks well dodgy.... Say you want an original one that doesn't say "Replacement" on the cover as the inside says "Data cannot be garanteed as correct" thats what skoda did to me !!

Also get them to get you a replacement vin sticker with all the option codes etc etc to stick in the new book as well.. Im sure they can get volkswagen to do this as it was their fault they lost the original !!

Thanks for the advice Lee.

This has never happened to me before and it has left me a little worried as im meticulous about service history and bills for the cars I own.  If I buy new bulbs, the bill goes into a folder for the car!!!

Ill see what happens when I get all the information plus book from the dealer and go from there.
