Cant undo the manifold!! Please help!!!
« on: 03 January 2008, 02:12 »
Hi all

I'm tryin to remove the exhaust manifold from the head so i can remove it. I have removed the top four and the first and fourth bottom ones but can't get clear access to the other two. They are reaslly rusty and are rounding off and i can't get the mole grip on them like the other two.

I'm getting so frustrated  and even mashed up my little finger!!!

Anyone know how i can get them last two ba****ds off?!

lots of penatrating oil!! might want to get two nuts the same size to fit the exhaust bolt and try and take the whole bolt out with the old nut still on it.

I find its easier to take the head off with the manifold still on (either by undoing the 17mm nuts or those C clips depending on what model you have). That way you have much better access to the remaining studs on the head.

Dremel++ When I took the engine out of my car the same two nuts were an arse to get to, I couldn't whack a socket over them because of the pipe itself, so I just stuck the little thin cutting wheel on my dremel and chopped the nut, took about 2mins for each one...I love my dremel!

Then I had to pop down to Halfords to buy a stud extractor to remove the old studs, remember, when putting new ones in, lots of copper slip!

Get a set of Irwin bolt extractor socket heads. I got myself some a while ago after similar problems with caliper bolts and other bolts on the car. I think they're about £20 for 5 but they grip anything. You then just need to muscle to free them!

I've used a dremel in the past, and you can get molegrips on there if you persevere!
