Dashboard lights
« on: 01 January 2008, 22:55 »
Hi there

One of the bulbs that light up the dials on the dash has gone. I want to replace it because at night time it's failry hard to see how fast i'm going

How easy is it to replace the bulb? And are the bulbs conveniently sold in places like halfords? Thanks :)

Bulbs you'll need to get from VW but they're not expensive. Get a few as they're usefull to have in reserve.

As for changing them check your haynes manual if you have one. You have to remove all the switches off the dash then remove the surround and then pull the clocks out. Hard to explain really. It's a bit of a pain, especially the speedo cable.

Its not to hard, just takes time.

If you do change them, do them all or sometimes one side can be brighter than the other !

Better still, replace them with LED's not bulbs, then that way you know they'll outlast the car! Plus, they are nice in red ;)

I guess Rubjonny is not logged on so in his place I will suggest you check out his How To Change Instrument light cluster in Mk2 Maintenance and info. Cracking instructions.

Don't forget to remove the vacuum pipe off the back that drives the mpg part of the MFA.

For information the white backed bulbs for the 8v GTI dash are 94p + VAT from VW, Part No. 431919040A

Here's the link

http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=10385.0

It's on page 2 of the mk2 maintenance and info

I replaced all my lights (3) last weekend with pukka VW ones and replaced the voltage stabiliser. As said it is not hard just fiddly - I took my time over it and had a ferret around behind the dash checking other things whilst I was at it.
