Corrado G60 into my mk2
« on: 31 December 2007, 12:18 »
Hi guys due to the Corrado prices being pants and my G60 engine/charger in mine being spot on I am thinking of breaking my rado G60 and putting the engine into my mk2 16v next year.Is there a guide anywhere on the net  about the conversion? had a quick nosey around but cant find anything.Does anyone know if I will need anything else for the conversion ie intercooler pipework with it being in the inner wing in the C..Do I have to alter anything in the mk2 engine bay so that in the future I can convert it back to a 16v if need be?cheers

ive got an engine, and a mk2 golf, all i need to is bring the two together, i guess if your swopping from your existing car youll have everything you need.

my golf is an 8v, so probably has more in commen than a 16v does.. firstly mines digipants and the g60 engine loom matches up to the body ( although i had the body loom as well ) .. i have the rado intercooler and its a proper poxy thing so im looking to go FMIC but i think ill need the U-bend as fitted on rallyes. at the same time im lookiing to upgrade to a topfill rad but im not sure how the G60 plumbing differs to mine at the moment.

i belive the 16v has cable shifter, which im having to install as my 8v uses Rod change
im also buying a adapter kit so i can use a clutch cable save buying and fitting a pedal box and the hydraulics.. you could remove this from your rado though. id it would make sense to take your brakes over also.

as for converting the engine bay as you put it... isnt a rado a golf chasis with different shell.. certainly with my 8v all the mounts ie, gearbox/engine are the same, my 8v driveshafts fit but its been suggested the rado G60 ones are abit more beafy.

the things im trying to find out at the moment are.. exhaust options i dont want to melt the boot around my steering coloum :( .. where does the carbon canister fit or is it better removed... and are there any mounts i dont have when i fit the cable shift...

HI Dolly thanks for the info the carbon canister hangs down the inner wing under the airbox and can be removed fine, infact does very little if the cars done over 100K as well, heres a thread on its removal  a straight forward affair, I use this site as well for info www.the-corrado.net
 http://the-corrado.net/forum/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=53994&hilit=carbon+canister+and+removal
make sure you replace the crankshaft pulley bolt with a mk1 DX engine bolt and washer again as detailed on the Corrado site... in engine bay forum a bit of a weak point on the G60 engine as the orignal is a stretch bolt and a few have come adrift causing a lot of damage, the exhaust I hope I can use the Corrado downpipe and the rest from the mk2 otherwise I will fabricate 1 from the 2 thats easy enough..couldnt help a great deal on gearbox as yet,I  havent looked into it in great detail as yet but the G60 is hydraulically operated as well, if you need any info or pics etc from the complete G60 set up let me know,as I wont be stripping it for a month or 2.If you can get hold of the Rodger Bentley Corrado manual worth its weight in gold with 1 of these engines was lucky enough to bag one off E.bay for a fiver.Heard front mounts are the way to go but my G60 is standard and is good as it is just kept all the crud out of the fins, plus golf/rallye fmic`s arent cheap..thanks again Nick

Yep I just dont think the cost is worth it unless you have serious power plus makes it an expensive conversion, obviously the golf and rallye have larger intercoolers and still the same std power at 160,I just kept mine std for reliabilty and kept the cooling side 100% as they do run hot,had no problems love the egnine hate the coupe style of the Rado, and dont want to sell it for peanuts so will chop off the front end of the car and break the rest,G-Werks are your men with the G60 unit .DONT use Jabbersprt at all.I swapped the crank pulley bolt only a couple of quid from VW going by the reports on C-Net its got to be worth doing..

Wouldn't it be better to sell your Rado to someone who will look after it? then with the money buy the engine etc. That is a sweet looking Rado mate, don't destroy it!

Have checked up on Rado prices and they are poor to say the least,in the last 3k miles I have had the charger re-built replaced the waterpump/radiator,sensors,all new belts battery uprated headlight loom all which can go onto the mk2 not long ago had a full service plugs cambelt kit, previous owner had a new clutch fitted so all runs sweet as a nut plus its not long had a new Cat 1 alarm and has a good set of tyres.I will be having the alarm removed and re-fitted to my mk3 Vr6 and the tyres are going onto a set of TT Comps I`m putting on my mk3 so all in all will be getting more  off the car than I can sell it for plus will sell whats left on E.bay etc..I know its a shame to break it but there a few niggles which peeps will haggle and haggle about usual rip in drivers seat sunroof doesnt tilt/slide fuel gauge needle has a mind of its own speedo needle sometimes stops gotta tap the dash to jump start it back into life..few caraprk dings here and there but the car as whole is genuine accident/rust free..No point in selling it when I know the engine is great only to buy an unknown engine to put in my mk2 plus I like the G60 lump  and love the mk2`s so the combination of the 2 should be good.Genuine LHD  G60 prices have gone up and up over the last few years..So even if I sold the rado and my mk2 wouldnt have enough cash for a pukka G60 so though it was the best option.I do have a few feelers out 1st to see if anyone wants to buy it for a sensible price but a conversion is on the cards if I can`t get reasonable money for it..
