Central locking problem - am I being a div?
« on: 28 December 2007, 09:20 »
Apologies if i'm being stupid, but when trying to fault find the problem with the central locking on my first MK2 GTI 8v (which i got last week and love already), i checked the haynes manual, the bentley manual and the posts on here which all point to the central locking pump which resides in the boot. Usually the problem seems to be caused by a vacuum hose coming loose or splitting, resulting in the pump continuing to run for a couple of minutes after you turn the key.

I get this issue, but instead of the noise coming from the boot, it seems to come from somewhere inside the dash (sort of below the radio, behind the vents). I've also checked the boot area, and unless i'm being completely thick (which, to be fair, has happened many times before) I just can't see where the pump should be. Theres some loose rubber straps over at the passenger side in front of the rear light cluster, but nothing else that matches the diagrams in any of the manuals i've seen.

It appears to be a factory-fit central locking system as one of the original inner door membranes was intact with the actuator behind it. Has the pump simply been stripped out of the boot at some point, and the noise i'm hearing from the dash is something else?

I plan to remove the dash in the next month anyway (its split along the top so i have a decent replacement) so i will hopefully find the noisy component soon. If it turns out to be the AWOL central locking pump, is this normal - did VW fit the pump behind the dash in some models?

Or am i being a div?

The straps you are seeing are for a first aid kit I think  I thought the central locking pump was on drivers side in the boot behind the carpet?
