Second skin door membranes?
« on: 21 December 2007, 16:17 »
Hi
I have a rear footwell leak problem in my 3 door. I just can't find where its coming from but it's a nightmare at this time of year...
Anyway I checked the door membranes and they look OK.
I've read loads of advice about this topic and one recommendation is to "put a second sheet of plastic over the lower part of the door and tuck it in at the bottom" - can anyone explain exactly what is involved here, it doesn't really make sense to me (inside the original membrane? outside it? tuck it in where????).
Another peide of advice is checking drain holes in the inner skin of the door (not the main drain holes in the bottom of the door) apparently there are drain holes on the inner side along where the membrane is stuck down to drain water that gets pooled at this point - but I sure can't see these on my car and if they were on this side surely it would defeat the object of the membrane anyway and let water through to the door seal area?!
Confused

Take your door card off and spray a hose down the outside of the window forcing water to run down the inside of the door. Take a look and see if there are any leaks in the membrane.

I can email you a pic if you want?

Nice one thanks for that advice.

Any clue about this extra tucked in plastic membrane trick?

Hey that's brilliant

Thanks for the help.

Now all I need to do is sort the door membranes, replace the door seals, get the drivers door sag fixed, find the bulkhead leak, take out the carpets, dry the soundproofing and relpace the heater matrix that's steaming me windscreen up.
By midsummer I should have a warm dry car!

where is your leak coming from in the bulkhead? by the way, before you waste money on window seals make sure your door metal isnt bent out slightly as i bought some new ones once and they still didnt fit flush to the window, i think the metal strip that holds the seal was knackered too.
i must buy a new car!
