Not sure how accurate these mpg readings are on our mk2's. I average 27 most of the time and the most i've got it to was 33 when i drove 20 miles at a constant 60mph.
Some people claim to reach around 40mpg but i really dont take any notice any more because i just dont think the readings are accurate enough to worry about.

What car do you have?

I easily got a 42 on the mway doing a very constant 60 in my valver and at 70 it only went down and hovered around 39-40, normal town use with occasional roar  was about 28-32.
Before that, my normal was btwn 17 and 24. This was due to air leaks, injector seals, dodgy TCI module and general lack of maintainence by previous owners.

There are thin clear vac pipes that go into cloth like braided rubber hoses, check these havent perished as they control the mfa readings.

Mine reads around 35 on average
No matter how hard I thrash it

Probably a slight (read- major) exaggeration by the computer
But nevermind!

Although I do think it is generally quite good on fuel regardless of what the computer says

So so so so so many threads on MPG!

Must be the time of year for it..... Could it be the cold weather means engine takes longer to heat up so is running rich for longer?

Either way it must be said that the MPG display on the dash is the most unreliable reading to go by! It relies on a vacuum line that could be 20 yrs old by now, tiny leak in it and your reading is off.

The only reliable way to gauge your true MPG is take notes of fuel in, miles done and average it over a few tanks.
