Car won't idle..
« on: 18 December 2007, 14:26 »
Hi all, I've got a 92 1.8 driver, 45k.

Over the last 4-5 weeks I've had idling problems with it sitting around 700ish rather than it's usual 1kish. Drove the car this morning for a 10 minute drive, then 10 minute drive back for lunch. Just tried starting it now and it starts fine but unless you hold the revs in, it just drops out and dies. When you do hold them youself, they are very wobbly.

Any idea what this could be? Really don't want to take it to a garage this close to Christmas! Poor enough as it is..

Cheers!

sounds like some sort of vacuum/air leak.
check the bolts holding the carb are tight and have a look for split/loose hoses.

You could also have a look at this - http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=33259.0 to see if anything there can help you track down the problem.

And have a search for things like "Pierburg idle problem" or "driver idling problem".

Well my Dad spoke to one of his colleagues who used to be a mechanic. He said because my petrol was low it could possibly be crap in the bottom of the tank being dragged through the carb and blocking it. So what we did was warmed the engine up, stuck the revs up to about 4kish, then covered up the air intake for about 10 seconds, then uncover the intake so it rushes air in at a high pressure. Did this a couple of times and it's fixed! Now idles back to normal :)
