wishbone bolt

the verticle bolt at the reat of the wishbone is spinning, it has failed its MOT on this.  i went to tighten it up and it just spins. it is still attached to the captured nut the other side, but its just not captured anymore. i have been told that the only way to get to the captured nut is to take up the passenger carpet and cut a hole in the floor, tighten the bolt up and weld the nut back in place and then weld the floor up.

is this the only way? i hope not  i dont want my floor cut about

Unfortunately that is the only way i believe!!

Cant believe your mot tested spotted that or was it hanging out?

its not hanging but its loose enough to give a tiny amount of play on the wishbone that causes a small knock when coming to a stop and pulling away

when i fitted non gen arms, i got new vag bolts, but when fitted it was like they was too long and hit the body on the other side, so they gave an impression of tight, but they was some movement, and it knocked when pulling away and stopping... then i realised what the washers were for that came with the wishbones... 

but it doesnt sound lke this is your problem, looks like you need to find a skilled welder...

i work at a garage where we restore campers and beetles, so welding is second nature for us lol

sometimes you have to wonder who designed these cars, and decided to put a captive nut which is completly inaccesable which happens to house a bolt for a serviceable item.

had this on my daily, cost 85 quid to sort out... and yes it does involve cutting open the floor pan...
