My fave as well. Only 71 made IIRC and they cost £25,000 (£54,000 in today's money).  It was only until they released the R32 that they ever made a faster GTI. Just for you:

Ive had both, loved the speed of the 16v and wasnt that bad on fuel, got an 8v now, its good at what it does and cheaper to fix if it goes wrong, saves me a few quid on insurance as well.

test drive a 16v and make your mind up then, although a drive of a decent 16v will have you wanting one, i wish i never sold mine
