A/C Losing Gas
« on: 08 December 2007, 17:13 »
Now this is somthing ive been meaning to ask you guys for a while.
When i first got my 1.8T the air con didint work, Took it back to the vw dealer thay said that a vave was leaking so thay replaced it and re-gased it.
It worked for about 10 months then stopped again. Took it back again thay did a leak test ( Thay Put in some blue dye or somthing?) said it wasnt leaking and just needed re-gasing, so got it done free. The  mechanic remembered my car and said the reason could be that i need to use the A/C every day to stop the seals inside going dry and losing gas. I used it as much as i could but This summer stopped working again  As we didnt have much of a summer id havent bothered to evan look at it.
If vw cant find a leak what do you think it could be?? Is the mechanic talking s***?  Do i need a new compressor? Any advice would be good cheers.

i had this although it was on a passat, turned out to be the compressor. The system had a slow leak but it only leaked when the air con was running, it got worse until it just lost nearly all the gas in one go(i thought it was overheating when i seen the gas).

i wouldnt change the compressor just yet, if its leaking there will be the die somewhere. there are parts that are hidden from view like the condenser and i think there is something behind the glove box too.

there must be someone on here with a better knowledge of the a/c systems in a mk4

Rich,

I seem to be having the same problem with the climatronic system on my 4motion - a VW/Audi specialist reckons it is the compressor which will be around 300 sheets.....
