I think my DV's just gone pop?
« on: 06 December 2007, 14:36 »
I think my DV's has gone..
I was booting and it just didnt quite feel like there was the torque as usual. So kept booting it to try and analyse and all off a sudden there was a serious lack of power. Now when you boot it the turbo sort of kicks in for a few hundred rpm, then its just like a limp lettuce. The cars done 8k miles, about 4.5 months old, gets driven with enthusiasm most of the time and has visited Mr Revo.
This sounds like a classic DV issue from what I've read but would welcome some opinions to be sure. I am a bit paranoid of taking it in for warranty after just 8k as it will be pretty obvious why its gone so quickly. I am toying with the idea of just buying one (about £27) and fitting it myself...

I'd look for airleaks first, you my have just blown a hose off somewhere. I wouldn't have thought a blown DV would make THAT much difference in power delivery but I'm no expert.

I wasn't aware that there was a issue with the DV on these cars, i take it this only happens with re-mapped cars running higher boost?
Regardless, if the dv has indeed failed, i would assume it's a diaphram type as with most oe ones, there will now be an open loop fron the turbo outlet back to the inlet so it's virtually impossible for the turbo to generate any boost.

Thanks, I've had a look now but couldn't spot anything obvious.

I asked the stealer again about the diverter valve, got a different person this time and he had no idea what one was. Anyone know if this is the official VW name for the part or is it called something else.??

Logic sounds good to me. Are there any other reasons the car would feel like the turbo wasn't working properly?

i agree with the pipe blowing off, i wouldnt have thought a DV failure would cause this, ive had diaphragm dumpvalves split on me in the past but the car has still boosted so i assume this would be similar with a recirc

watch the sump ask guy he went over a some toilet paper and it carcked!!!!

I'm not saying this is definately the reason for the problem in this case but if the dv fails you will loose power, end of story, it's like having a hole in a boost pipe. If you initially had a small split in the diaphram then you might not notice a huge loss in power but the turbo will be working harder to achieve and maintain boost.

Just convinced me why i've not modified mine - god knows currently i have 4 cars and only the golf runs so i'm stuffed if i'll start messing around with that one - 300hp will just have to remain a dream - best of luck though, these things do tend to give sleepless nights and a heavy feeling in the stomach!

could deffinately be DV, with the mk5 things are slightly different, the DV valve also controls the traction control, which vents boost to control wheelspin by reducing power, if the DV is diaphram is split and leaking boost gets vented all the time.

mine is doing similar things...

i was giving it the beans and the power just cut out, whilst exiting a roundabout...

i quickly pulled into nearside lane, and had a play...i couold change gear, and they all selected, but the car wouldnt accellerate....it was still revving though, but in a retarded way....

i just keept going at about 45 mph doing nothing, letting it coast occasionally and then trying to power it up,...after about 1 min, of slow driving in limp mode, full power returned...

this has happened 4 times, the most recent being wednesday.

car needs a service so its going into the main dealer next week to see if its showing faults...am gonna ask them to check divertor valve, and failing that its going back to awesome to see if they can suss it...its getting 12m eibach spacers there shortly anyway.

will keep you posted.
