The TDIs are more expensive to buy & diesel is 5p a litre more than petrol so you'll have to do a LOT of miles to break even.

diesel is about 4.5% more a litre than petrol, but the TDI 150 is 66% more efficient than the 1.8T 150

At the moment I don't do that many miles but I'm desperately trying to get a decent job having graduated from University so could well be doing 100 miles a day by the time I think of buying.

if you do end up in a job doing 100 miles a day then you'll be looking at saving a grand a year with the derv.  IMO you're probably better off waiting until you've found out where you'll be working before you decide.

Thanks immortal. So basically the 1.8T is the best choice unless I do mega miles.

depends on how long you plan to keep the car, if you want to tune it, you could break even over 3 years from only doing 14K a year

Well depends how far you drive, The TDI will give you 45+ MPG and the same performance as the 1.8T, i just prefer petrol. Im sure rhyso will be along in a min to tell you how good the TDI's are!!

hmm missed this! too busy putting wardrobes together!!

Ridge has pretty much covered all the bases as to the pros and cons.  Tax is cheaper by about £100 too

Yeah, I noticed tax is a fair bit cheaper. Would insurance be much cheaper on the GT TDI 150, as I noticed it's group 13 whilst the 1.8T is group 14?

i expect they are going to be able the same, throw your details at a few companies for test quote and see how they come out for both.

Bit of info here for you.

Insurance on the petrol one will be more than the tdi.

The tax on the petrol one is alot more than the tdi.

Better mpg in diesel.

I say diesel all the way. I aint saying the petrol aint good but if you can get same performace and keep the mpg then you laughing.
Diesel power all the way

i would plum for the 1.8t hands down being an owner of one of these that runs at 204bhp but if you like the mk2 that much buy a mk4 with an arse end shunt and put the 1.8t engine in the mk2! thats my opinion mate

Thanks for the info guys.

Oh believe me I've already thought of putting a 1.8T into it. There's no way I can afford the labour or cost of engine and parts to do so at the moment though. Also, at my age I'm not sure I'd get insured on it.

I have owned both cars and the TDI is better by far, the tourque is unbeatable and you can get 50mpg.  If you are willing to change the turbo on the TDI for a bigger beast then you will piss over 1.8t's all day long
