exhaust manifold- driver 1600
« on: 05 December 2007, 18:53 »
hello
my driver 1600 has a cracked exhaust manifold.
i want to get a second hand one, and prefer to have it from as late model as possible.
so will a manifold from a mk3 1.6/1.8 fit my engine?
thx

Not sure if a mk3 one will fit, but one from a mk2 8v gti will definitely fit and then you can use the gti exhaust system to help release some horses!

and if i fit the gti manifold, do i have to replace the whole pipework, or only the downpipe?

mk3 system is no good, mk2 gti system is what you want. you'll need the GTI manifold & downpipe + the rest of the system from a GTI or 1.8 carbed MK2.  I did this on my 1600 and it really did make a big difference :)

thx
i guess the gti system is wider, so suppose i put the gti manifold and downpipe, is it possible to use a reducer to attach it to the thiner system of the driver?
and someone offered me a manifold and downpipe of g60- is it like the gti's?

the g60 one will fit but its even bigger bore than the GTI system, GTI is 2" G60/16v is 2.25".

You could get a reducer made perhaps but if I were you I'd wait till you have a complete GTI system you can throw on all at the same time ;)

thx
i found in a scrapy a manifold and downpipe of gti, the bloke will dismantle it and if it's not cracked i'll buy it, i might buy in a second though the rest of the system- i guess it's the best solution.
just last question: the gti has an extra muffler as i recall- doesn't it harm the horses?

nope if it flows well enough for a GTI its not going to make a driver run any worse ;)
I fitted a complete GTI system to my 1.6 Driver and it really made a difference, it was revvy and pulled harder high up in the revs :)

ok, so i got the whole system from a scrapyard and it's waiting to be installed.
but the middle box seems to be a litlle squeezed, probably it got hit from a pavement or something.
should this be any reason for concern?
