Original equipment tyres?
« on: 05 December 2007, 12:19 »
I've noticed a few people on here comment that the oe tyres (Dunlop sportmax?) on the GTi are sh!t.
Is this the only tyre they come with or is there a choice? Has anyone been able to ask for a different tyre to be supplied from new or have they just changed them off their own back once they got the car?

Kenny

I've got Conti's on mine in Dubai, probably because of the hot weather and different road surface there is a different compound and recommended manufacturer.  Plenty of grip here though!

Is it not a bit unusual for a car maker to fit so many different tyres, from what i've seen in the past they nearly always fit the same ones or at least from the same manufacturer.
Would it be fair to say then that the more recent cars are coming with Contis? or is it still a lottery?

VW use the following manufacturers tyres on Golf GTI's.

Continental.
Bridgestone.
Dunlop.
Michelin.

It's luck of the draw.

There is much forum debate on which is best or worst but a lot of is quoted on the basis of magazine tyre test results rather than personal experience.

Don't worry about the Dunlop's, they are a fine tyre and unless you are Gavan Kershaw or Sebastian Loeb then you really won't notice the subtle differences between respective brands.

Although I expect like everyone else on here (including me) you'll claim that due to your extraordinarily well honed driving skills that you need the ultimate everyday road tyre to extract maximum feel with minimal sidewall flex on your way to Asda.
