Standard mk5 Gti,rear bumper and side skirts painted.
« on: 05 December 2007, 00:59 »
Hi lads,

Looking into getting the rear bumper, side skirts, buffed and painted to match.

Some tosser keyed my left wing(slightly) and i managed to buff it to look a bit better, although i need it resprayed as it is too deep. Consulted 3 repairers incl VW, £450/500 ,and that was only the left wing!!!!!!!!!

Took it to a local ex Ford sprayer/repairer who has all the latest equipment, and has a very good rep in South Shields/Tyneside,and asked to do the bumper/s skirts aswell,£200 ,Very happy with that, but i need to know from the lads who had the work done on the bumper etc if they were happy after months of salt/road grime and jet wash etc,and any flaking probs.

Hope you can help guys and dolls,

Chris.

If the plastic is correctly prepared and the correct primer used i see no reason why you should have any issues with paint flaking or pealing away. You need to be careful with jet washers anyway as these can catch the edge of even properly adhered paint

I would be a bit sceptical if someone is offering to re-paint/lacquer a wing, which will most likely require a wash in onto the door and possibly the bonnet depending on where the scratch is, and do the bumper and side skirts for £200 that seems a bit cheap to me, unless you know them personally and your getting mates rates? I'm just speaking from my own experience when i helped completely re-paint my last car, i saw the amount of work involved in what seemed like a simple repair. If you want the job done properly you need to remove trims, lights etc so that you can get the existing paint properly key'd (as in prepared) round all the edges other wise you risk the paint or more likely the lacquer peeling back in a year or so.

I've had all my bumpers done. The rear bumper, the 2 side skirts, front lip spoiler and my two wing mirror external housings. Cost me £450.
I havent had any problems so far.

If someone is offering to do it for £200 including the wing then that is a joke. £200 will only get you a £200 job which wount be a good one at that!

Father -in-law had his car done by a "professional" paint shop and even they managed to get a border bloom where the laquer met the original paintwork

You need solid recommendations before you can feel secure with handing over your pride and joy. £200 sounds good, but it may cost you a lot more in the long run if the job is poor.

I had a caractere body kit fitted to my old mk5, I tried to do it on the cheap first time, I regretted it straight away, the guy ruined the whole job. The second guy had a go, same story bad job not worthy of going on the car  3rd time asked around and got a vw approved bodyshop to do it, it cost me an absolute fortune to have the whole kit painted and fitted but the job was spot on. I learnt a lesson with paint, dont try and get it done on the cheap! ask around to see who is worthy of doing the job, it is worth payin the extra money if need be. Theres nothin worse than bad paint on a car it just ruins the whole look.

i would seriously recommend getting a proper professional job done.

If it isnt the consequences may well be:

1. Spoil the look of the car and could make it look hideous
2. Meaning getting the job done again resulting in more money spent
3. If the job is really REALLY bad then you may need to buy new parts from local VW dealer (and they are not cheap!)
4. Meaning the car spend smore time in the garage rather than in your drive and on the road!

EDIT:
Have a look here for detailed photos of my colour-coded bumpers: http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=70655.0

Thats how your bumpers should look after being colour-coded!
