jacking point on mk1 gti?
« on: 03 December 2007, 19:20 »
Hi All

I have been Jacking the car up recently on the normal jacking points on the side (Where the little triangles are), however this is slowly making a messof the paint work/car.
Also the jacking point doesnt seem to have a streghthened bit of metal like most cars ive owned. am i jacking it up wrong or is there a better place to jack?

this is all using a trolly jack, dont trust the scissor ones after one collapsed once!

Cheers

Jacking the car at these points will cause an enormous amount of damage...I've welded several that suffered this. Jack the front up on the chassis where the wishbones attach...it's good and strong there. Jack the rear at the axle attachments or on the axle cross member, be careful not to trap the handbrake cable. Like you I always use a trolley jack, safer and quicker. Use a piece of wood between jack and car, unless you have one of those posh padded ones.

Thats brilliant

I am pretty sure i know what you mean

the big square cross bar at the rear, i normally put axel stands there so thats cool

for the front is this at the point where bushings are normally fitted?

Thanks

Still not sure on the rear jacking point, the cross bar looks to thin to jack on.

To jack up one side, I use the mount at the end of this beam, where the trailing arms connect. Be careful not to trap the hand brake cables. To jack up the whole back end, I use the axle beam, which is a wacking big girder. Provided you get the pad of the jack central you shouldn't have a problem.
