coil packs (passat question)

my dad just had his pissrat serviced - it's a 2litre (non-turbo) 2002 model. a coilpack had apparently failed which made it fail the emission test. it was replaced but my dad had to pay for it would he be in for a chance to reclaim it off VW UK if it's a known problem? and the car is out of warranty? i thought it was only a problem on Golfs and that all coil packs should be replaced?

Is it the same 2.0 as is in the golf gti?  AFAIK that doesn't use the same coil system as the 1.8T which has individual coils on top of each sparkplug.  I THINK the 2.0 has a more traditional coil / ignition lead system.  Its the 1.8T's coil on sparkplug system that is notorious for failing and there is some sort of goodwill replacement scheme for fairly new / low milage cars affected by the problem.
