hi, new here and would like some advise please:-)
« on: 01 December 2007, 18:30 »
hi,

am new here, my names james,im from south devon
am normaly found on the vzi forum due to being a air cooled fanatic, got a 66 bug and a 75 bay camper

you will be pleased to no i have rescued a mk1 gti 1.8 out of the local paper for 700 notes
i must say it isnt in to bad a condition but i have a few little problems that i need to iron out which i cant work out how to do

i have the oil warning light and warning alarm on constantly when driveing, now theres no problem with the system as the previous owner has had it pressure tested and had a new pressure sensor fitted
but after takeing it for a drive today, i notice the external oil cooler isnt getting hot...

now im unsure if a 1.8 gti was fitted with an external oil cooler as standard or if this has been put on???
and if the oil pump has packed up could this result in the oil light and buzzer comeing on, i also get the oil temp light come up some times, altho the car runs like a dream..

the other problem i have is, when driveing the car,it can sometimes randomly cut out...but if you turn the key and restart it,it starts and carrys on driveing fine??? is this a relay or fuel pump?

hope someone can point me in the right direction
james

hi james
first off do a search of the forums for similar problems
but if the oil is ok on the dipstick and it runs ok otherwise then it sounds like a sender/electrical prob
check oil every day until you're sure its constant and make sure you've not got blue smoke etc
check compression if you can
searching the forums repeatedly can resolve most issues
but well done and welcome to having a bit of style

wayne gardner smokes one rothmans too many
500cc 2stroke bad for ya health

i agree tho,....drivein that gti puts a smile on my face.

wel;l thanjs for ya help so far...lookin at previous thread on the forum the oil buzzer and light apperas to be a common problem that can be solved by pressure switchs and sortin out bad wireing....so i will have anothe looksy....i just need to sort out the random cutting out that keeps happeing...

  Hi dude and welcome.
I got a prblem with my mk1 cabby cutting and we traced it back to the fuel filler neck being rotten.  Therefore a combo of rust and water have past thro to the carb.  Have a look down and around the petrol cap, u might see it there.  AND FOR THE GODS SAKE DON`T USE A CANDLE.

if you use the search function and use advanced you can find some threads that may be useful!

i have a few threads about regarding oil pressure as i also have issues, here is one for you!

http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=60788.0

Good luck in sorting it!

i also understand that oil pressure buzzer warning light and buzzer are related to low coolant levels?! worth a checkl? There are separate high and low oil pressure senders mounted to the top of the bell housing and at side i think (don't quote me on that - my car knowledge is sh!te)

again, Good luck!!

hi, thanks for ya advise,

i had another  look at the fuel filler neck and it doesnt appear to be rottern, this is one thing i checked for when i brought the car as i heard they where prone to rusting there...

i got a fuel pump relay today to see if this sorts the cutting out prob, but i cant test it for the minute as i have now managed to wreck the down pipe on the exhaust  so ive got a new one on order along with a servise kit to give it a once over and i will be pickin up new pressure sensors tomorow...but after reading the thread that [han] has posted a link for i am now considering putting a new oil pump on it....coz like i said in my first post...the oil cooler doesnt seem to get hot after a long drive

the joy of old vws ay....you gotta luv em

you cutting out sounds like to me wiring to the relay in the back of the fuse box, also check to make sure all wires to the fuel pump are properly connected.

If you can't find additional information on this forum, great source of additional information can be found on the vwgolfmk1.org.uk (focuses on mk1 golfs only)

i spent money on a new fuel pump relay which didnt solve my cutting out problem, hooked it up with a fused switch and just bridged the connections on the fuse box to control the fuel pump, the car would still cut out despite this so the fuel pump relay wasnt at all...

in the end it was the hall sender at fault, one new dizzy and the car has been peachy since
