ED30 brakes let the side down........
« on: 28 November 2007, 22:25 »
Well , its now run in and I can stretch its legs and the biggest disappointment is the brakes
Any 'pushing on' just leaves you with no feel and little confidence.
I am hoping they may get better with even more miles but I doubt it!

So what are the options for upgrades on the GTI/ED30? (std 18inch ED30 wheels)

And what does everyone else think of the brakes ?

There are quite a few brake upgrades out there

Tarox
Brembo
AP
ECS

The one below is the one I'll be getting

With red calipers:-

Bought from here:-

You can go absolutely bonkers if you have the cash, but I think 6 pot Porsche brakes that come off a 2.5 tonne 4x4 are more than enough

Yeah i find the brakes to be the weakest point. Bite ok, but fades very quickly. So after a few hard stomps, its like there's a block of wood under the pedal.
I'll probably get some Brembos some time. Was quoted about 1400 inc fitting i think.

I upgraded to AP Racing and the pedal feel is so much better than with the stock brakes. No snatching and no fading and instant response at all speeds (I tested on autobahns). Added bonus of 10Kg weight saving too!

I'd rather have them and not need them, than need them and not have them!

Did feel like mine were a little soft compared to the demo i drove... took it into the dealers and they told me they were very soft compared to both their demos. Apart from that they are fandabbydosey  no fade whatso ever.. not that i would ever drive that fast

I think they are crap too... almost reminds me of the Mk1 brakes in terms of lack of confidence in them... I honestly felt better when driving my Mk2 16v in terms of braking than the Ed30.  The R32 brakes were awesome...

Its little things like this that make you an R32 really is worth the extra money.. Its just because the Gti is good value the R32 get blasted as being too expensive.

I came from a BMW before my GTI, and I agree totally, the brakes are a real downfall of the car. My BMW 3 Series brakes were so much better, so much feel to them.

My girlfriends new Blue motion Polo brakes, although no where near the stopping power have alot more feel and there isnt about half an inch of travel before they work like on my GTI. I think this is the reason why GTI brakes snatch. Mine seem to have an "on and off". Makes for quite jerky breaking when you just slightly apply the breaks.  My girlfriend (when she summons the courage to drive my GTI) thinks they are the worst breaks she has ever used!

Only a small moan really, but not one that stops me from loving this car so much .............

i was thinking that the new cupra/new r32 calipers would work and could be a lot cheaper and would still have vw cover on them.

they have a larger caliper's than ed30
