Car is configured for either Time and Distance (10k/1yr) or LongLife (car decides? up to 2 yrs /20k I think)
from the day you pick it up.

Sounds like you are on Longlife.
I think you may be able to alter from Longlife to T&D but not the other way round (due to the special longlife oil) should u wish to
But I plan to run T&D but with longlife oil (all cars come from factory with this oil)

my GTI 07 service light came on at 9400 miles, was told it would be around 10k, they dont set the car up for longlife from new? or so i was told!

£138.50 for service Haysledens Barnsley, pretty good.

booked it in and next day oil light came on! good timing!
steel grey, 5 door , leather, parking sensors, IPod, 18" monza,MF wheel,  K&N filter , smoked rear lights and mirror indicators,,, no remap..... yet!!

If the data sticker has QG1 on it then it came out of the factory set to long life servicing.  I trust £138 includes long life oil (504) and not the cheaper time and distance (502) stuff. Remember that the 10K (T&D) service is just an oil change.

Oh and if the oil light is on - put some oil in it!!

A 10K oil change (lubrication service) with long-life oil is about £90 from a stealer.

cant be set to long life surely if needs service at 9.5 k?
being thick where is the data sticker, is it the thing in my handbook? stating engine type ect?

I havent driven the car since the light came on, not paying £15 in oil to have the dealer dump it after 2 days!

I had heard long life services were £200+

You're on long life servicing - the car will tell you when it wants a service - can be up to 20K/2 years.  If you want to switch to t&d (more suited to a gti) then book it in for a 10K lubrication service and make sure the stealer switches the service to t&d intervals.  Your next service would then be at 20K/24 months.
