Following mention in another thread in this forum, rather than hijack it:
There is now a ATB differential available for DSG equipped Mk5 GTI's. The Quaife manual transmission version has already been available for a few months. The DSG version costs £650 as opposed to £550 for the Manual - Both prices exclude vat. It's product # QDF19R.
ATB = Automatic Torque Biassing and is a development of the Limited Slip Differential.
Even with a Stage1 modded car and greatly improved suspension, it's still too easy to get the front wheels to slightly slip in greasy wet conditions (as the weather is now) on roundabouts, and that's without 'going for it'.
Apparently more torque gets delivered to the slower wheel and a 'softer' power delivery results. It works particularly well with DSG and TC, I'm told. It's guaranteed for life and is 'fit and forget'. The downside, if this is one, is that it weighs 10kg - Now, how much weight did I save on my carbon bonnet and big brakes? - Exactly 10kg just on the AP brakes. I suppose it's a bit heavy for Santa to put in my Xmas stocking.
The work does involve opening the DSG box and for that reason I won't consider this mod until after my warranty expires next summer. However, I will use JKM (my Revo tuner) who is very experienced at fitting such things as LSD's and he won't undertake it until he has researched it and feels 100% confident. He's even prepared to invest in any specialist tools as he's confident that Mk5 GTI owners will gradually increase their modding as the car gets older (and cheaper!).
The Ford Focus RS has a Quaife ATB and the Renault rival to the GTI has one too - All reports are glowing!
