help please

My beloved MK2 GTI GOLF has been worked on by so many cowboys that it now needs a new engine  :-[
Does anybody know what sort of engine I can put in and how much should I expect to pay.

there are so many options for a new engine now - youcould get an old mk2 and stick it in there, or look at one of the 2litre engines about, or one of the new 1.8T 's that are becoming popular. It reallu depends on what you want, i.e keep it original, or go mad for power.

Which 20v engine are you going to use Dizzie? And will you be documenting it like you did you mk3 dashboard swap? That would be very interesting read.

Does anybody know what sort of engine I can put in and how much should I expect to pay.

Just want to share my experience basically.
My 8v running fine, bodywork and interior in very good condition, except a few pestering problems like bouncy revs, tapping noise etc.

Advice was to get a newer engine to stop these problems. Cost of engine plus labour was quoted around  ?400 for a standard 1.8 engine and ?800 for 2ltr engine.

However my mechanic advised against it. Reason being that it will cost a lot of money to do the engine conversion and once it is done there are bound to be other problems. Why? Because other parts of a 15 year old car will need replacement with time, for example, ECU, gearbox etc. That means big job to get it right and that will cost more money.

Currently I?m still tempted to do a conversion but I think there is some truth in what he is saying. I?m on a budget so my option is quite limited. If I had the funds I will do 2ltr engine conversion and keep the car.

Recently I have come across an oak green 16v, which has a 2ltr engine in it. Engine conversion done by owner who happens to be a mechanic. I?m thinking of swapping but yet to find out the details.

I think you got to weigh your choices and make a decision, one of the major factors will be finance? how much is your cash flowing? Good luck.
