As far as I am aware the reverse lights have to work if fitted. If you don't have any it won't fail but if you do it will. I found this out when I had my old mini as I put 60's lights on the rear which did not have a reverse light built in when the original lamps on the car did. I thought I would have to fit a reverse lamp but the tester said that if the car doesn't have any he can't test them and reverse lights aren't a legal requirement.

well mine were clearly fitted and not tested!!!!!!! i watched the guy dot he test and questioned him after....

quick search of google....
http://www.motors.freeuk.com/faq/motl.htm

Are reversing lights part of the MOT test?
The testing manual makes no reference to reversing lights and are not testable items as such, however you *could* be issued with a failure if they were illuminated all the time.

so if the internet is right they are not testable but if illuminated permanently you will fail.....

nope completly not any part of the MOT, as I said earlier check the MOT testers manual, it aint in there.  The tester that failed your car was clearly a muppet who didnt know the rules ;)

tis all good then, ratio choice mostly come down to driver preference anyway, unless its really badly missmatched like fitting a diesel box on a 1.6 carby
