From 1996 Volvo 740 to 2007 Golf GTI
« on: 26 November 2007, 19:01 »
Hiya,

After 34 week waiting from MotorProvider I Collected a 5dr Black Metallic, Monza II's, I-Pod, PDC, Folding mirrors late last month (October). It should have had a sunroof and zenons but MP missed those bits off the order.

Well I have now done 1750 miles, and he's has started to loosen up nicely, only blipped 4k rpm 4 times during the running in period and have not exceeded 5k rpm so far. Got my warranty sorted out with VW UK in the first week of ownership and VW assist registration, although still minus the card but have checked with the RAC and I am on the system.

Daily commute is from Battersea to Dorking Surrey, the ride home up Boxhill is wonderful, where I struggled to get 50 round the bends with my old 740 we are now hitting 70 plus with plenty to spare.

Would I use MP again? YES. Saved nearly £3,800 on list including the cruise control and having dealt with VW dealers only to get £500 quid off it’s a no brainer.  Was pissed off about the zenons not so much about the sunroof, on the day of collection I had a very nervous sister asking 'you are going to buy this car aren't you?'

The one word that sums this car up is 'effortless', just as easy to drive around town or the motorway, although 90 seems to be the new 70 on the later. Getting around 30mpg and have started to use 97 octane as it sounds better!

Replaced the stock bulbs at the weekend with Halfords Super Brilliance, the guy in the store was well chuffed when he saw the car, a mark v (TDI) owner himself and on his 4th Golf, muttered they are brilliant except for the dealers! Anyways the only negative in the ownership so far was that the full beam lense was loose after changing the bulb on the passenger side, still can't believe how awkward this was for such a modern car, so a trip to dealer for a warranty replacement will be due, anyone else had the same problem? When the lense moves around the metal clip is impossible to fasten back on for both sides. New bulbs are superb btw.

Well after nearly 6 years 35k with Florence (Volvo 740, 119k in total) and never once a break down I am glad to have moved on.

Think more of the GTI as ‘The Chariot’ must be the Black metallic and the 18” Monza II’s .

You won't look back, it is indeed a great car. Have to agree with the dealer comment but then most dealers are the same. My friend is a car a salesman for BMW previously VW and the targets and work ethic they have is questionable to say the least. He also said that the service dept has 1 or 2 decent mechanics tops and the rest follow what they are doing out of a book, give them something unusual to deal with and they just scratch their head.

I'm pretty lucky as a mate has his own VW specialist garage so he looks after my cars.
