Might jus get the mk2 ones from dealer (assumption that they do still do em?)!
Swear your thread is jinxed mate, i went to the motor after posting and my driver side door handle now jams!  :laugh:

Unscrew the lick pin, and you can lift up the top of the door card and you should be able to fit your hand in the door behind the door card...

iirc you cant actually fit genuine vw mk3 handles to the mk2 doors as i think the mechansisms are different
