Buying Used Mk5 GTI - What to look out for?
« on: 23 November 2007, 15:55 »
I'm checking out a used mk5 tommorow morning and wandered whether there were any common faults / potential problems to look out for? Its from a main stealer so I should be able to get them to fix anything but its useful to know what to point out!

Many thanks,

Jon

Just the usual stuff,

check all the panels and make sure they line up,
check the wheels for white wormy looking marks. Ask for the wheels to be replaced if it has them.
Should have FSH if its from a dealer
make sure it has the latest ECU update
Ask what warranty claims this car has had

apart from that you should be ok

Look at the stickied section of the MKV section and adapt the checks on new car collection to a used car.

Typical used car extra's to look for are as in the what car link.

Buying Used Mk5 GTI - THe deal is done!

I've bought a white 5dr Oct-06 '56' plate GTI (needed 5dr practicality...) with antrachite leather, glass sunroof, 6CD in dash, Monza II 18" alloys, Xenons, thru-load  Dealer offered to retro fit cruise for £150 so gone for that too....

Rather more refined than the old-skool GTIs but then I guess it suits me getting old...

Now can't wait to Friday to pick it up  :nerd:

I do like the white, just wasn't brave enough so went for the safe silver option. They are excellent cars and cruise for £150 is a good result

Nice spec. White looks good with the black side sills too

White probably would not have been my first choice - inspite of it looking awesome!
The price made me brave, the sales manager said to me after we'd dealt - between you and me do you think I priced it too low...
I said I thought so to the tune of £1000-1500 and he just said he wasn't being greedy... 240 mile round trip (and back to collect it) but worth it

For what it's worth, a Mk5 GTI has turned up for sale locally - £15k (less a fiver) for Dec 04 (54 plate), 3-door, 40,500 miles, Xenons, 17's, Tornado Red, doesn't state if DSG, leather.

A common mistake - maybe deliberate sometimes - that really annoys me when reading for sale ad for the Mk5 GTI is the description, Recaro Sport Seats when the image patently shows standard seats and NOT bl00dy Recaros... are these people stupid or what?
