Leaking into driver's footwell - please help
« on: 19 November 2007, 23:42 »
Well its that time of year and my previously water tight vw is now leaking like a sieve into the driver's footwell - it leaks on the far right on the end of the fuse box metal side. I thought it was the bonnet release cable but this seems fine (although does this run alongside the fuse box enough for it to touch)- the windscreen was replaced in the summer and so I think it's leaking in the corner, so how do I seal it up - in other words do I put sealent under the bottom edge of the seal from the outside of the car or from the inside? - also when removing the speaker cover I can't see the water dripping (sat in the car this evening in a down pour and it dripped from below the fusebox but not from the bottom of the windscreen seal....)

Anyway any ideas as I don't want my floor pan to rust...

Thanks.

you need to seal it from the most outer point, if you seal it so the inside of the car dont get wet, you might still have water, damp rust inside the car that you dont notice, i would basically take apart that area as much as possible and case it back. Maybe wash the car, see where it goes?

My Corrado leaked in exactly the same place after a few months of having a windscreen fiited. I was so pi$$ed off with trying silicone and other things that I called Autoglass out, problem fixed but at a price

I dont know if this could be the case....but the sunroof drains can block and cause leaks. Best thing to use is an old bit of speedo cable (not that everyone has one of these spare!) and push it down the drain pipes at the front of the sunroof to remove any crud, just an idea.

Your water leak could also be the result of blocked wing vents inside the scuttle panel remove scuttle plastic and look in each corner for any dirt/leaves build up. Can cause leak.
i was told the 020 rod box was supposed to be a strong box,how wrong are they 5 and counting on my mk2. Hopefully the quaiffe box will last.

....also read this --> http://www.matey-matey.com/leak_prevention.shtml if it's coming in from the fusebox then start at step 2, but make sure you look at the rest of the sections to stop any future incidents.
......now officially dubless.

Check to see if your door card bottoms are wet also.
If your membrane is split the water tracks through the door card and to the other side of the door seal - nice

Tell tale signs of this are stains on the doorcard near the plastic door bins, wet door cards (and a footwell full of water).

Just done both of mine in preperation for the rain!

Have done door membranes already - completelely re-did them as per matey-matey's guide - it actually leaks a lot - took out a litre and a half this morning (have put in a bottle to catch the drip/ waterfall).
