All of the above replies are correct. Cutting the coils stiffens the spring rate considerably and generally upsets the handling and safety as well. Cutting coils also leaves springs untrapped in many cases which can lead to springs falling out of their seats. Illegal as well by the way. Spend the money and just do the job properly.

i went to get my exhuast looked at, and i got speaking to the guy behind the counter, and he used to have a mk2 , and we got talking and he said mine was riding a bit high, and how he cut the springs down in his car and it was fine, i told him i had heard it was dangerous and the spring could pop out , but he said that was rubbish and it would be fine, also he was a m.o.t tester and he said it would pass even if the springs were cut . ? im confused, dunno who to believe, not passing ur judgement.

I guess it boils down to:

Yes its possible but done badly will fcuk up your ride & maybe kill you.

Its much easier to do badly then well and when it comes down to it - why bother.

Springs are dirt cheap, better and safer.

Plus only pikeys cut their springs.

He might pass it, my MOT guy wouldn't!

As far as I know it will pass mot as long as when its jacked up and the wheel drops down the spring is still tight and not loose  :undecided:

When I was a young un and had my first car I bought spax springs but the car wasnt low enough at the back so I cut a coil off  :embarassed: Used to pass mot ok!

that's the point, when it is jacked up, the spring would fall out of the cup dependant on the cutting point.

People in garages ain't called grease monkeys for nowt (save a few)

When I bought my Mk2 someone had cut the springs. Wasn't untill it failed the MOT that I noticed. Not ideal :(

Didnt notice a great improvement when I put in proper lowering springas thoung.

Better safe the sorry!
Mk2 8v and 16v.

Always looking for bits!
