Any problems with mk4 gti turbo?

Hi, i want to get a mk4 gti t very soon. But some people say that there are alot a problems with this model. Please can anyone tell me the main problems.

A crucial thing to check is the water pump.  Many models featured a plastic part inside which eventually breaks off.

If that happens, and you're not on the ball, it can cause big problems as the engine will overheat and major damage could be caused.

Otherwise, it's the usual raft of sensor issues...you'll find that on most modern cars once they hit a certain age.

I'd say let the car speak for itself, if there's a good history with it, the car is tidy and the owner not a complete tool then it's likely to be alright.

Many models featured a plastic part inside which eventually breaks off.

the OEM water pump has plastic fins, the "clone" has metal fins.

when you replace the cam belt with a genuine cam belt kit the belt comes with a guarantee (which if it goes wrong VW will / shout fix any problems under this warranty (regardless of age)) if you replace the water pump at the same time with a non VW one then VW have been known to not honour the warranty becuase of none genuine part usage

Had my 2000 1.8 T for three years and done 50000 miles. Only prob ive had was the classic windows dropping into the door!  (Every mk4 had this!!) The engine has not missed a beat!!! Just keep it properly serviced

Ive got the 2.0 and im always looking on here for probs people have with the car. I know the 1.8t is a million times better but boy have i read a lot of probs that you guys have with that car. So compared to the 2.0 yeah it probably does have more issues but then again its probably because its a turbo and people who have owned it previously have really ragged it around.....cheap to fix or not its still a problem and the last thing you wanna see on a cold frosty morning!!!!


So far with my 2.0 only problem ive had is a little radiator leak and that was easily sorted by pouring a bottle of radiator leak sealant in.....so far so good!!!!

I'm not sure I agree with this.  I have a 1.8T and a 2.0 GTi. My Turbo has double the mileage of the 2.0 but drives like it's newer and is more refined.  The engines are not overstressed by the Turbo (even when re-mapped) as they end up with the around the same power as a standard TT quattro (225bhp) so at 150 bhp as most common 1.8T's are, they should last quite well if they are serviced properly.
