MK3 Golf Gti 8V (96) Anniversary
« on: 16 November 2007, 17:30 »
Hi guys....I'm new to this forum and decided to join as there are issues that i need to find out about my car that i seem to have problems with getting answers from you average garage!

I have Mk3 Golf GTi 8v...one o the Anniversary models...nevertheless...i understand that a lot of owners of this model have had problems with regard to the reverse gear. Early symptoms are a rather unpleasant chaifing sound or whining as u may call it. Then you get to further ware that involves the gear to pop out when reversing at speed or if more revs is required..i.e up hill.
I'v had all these problems since day one of having the golf from 2 years ago. But now its got to a stage where the reverse gear has given up responding....if you lock it in reverse it appears to go into gear but wont work but insted a thumping sound from the engine and a whining spinning sound. I have now lost complete use of the reverse gear!
I have read threads of the only fix being none other than a replacement gearbox...can anyone advise or respond otherwise as to how to go by this issue. Its way beyond the point of changin or topping up gearbox oil but more of an internal mechanical fault!Any suggestions fellow dubbers??

Realy??? A dont suppose i could ask wot sorta costs i would be looking at!? So did u get your existing one reconditioned or a complete replacement....I know that i can get a gearbox fitted for £100...but i'm just trying to track down a gearbox at the moment!?
Wot would be the procedure in the event of having to recondition the existing gearbox then??
And where did you go to get it done?? Or was it a job u undertook yourself?
I would undertake such a job myself if i had the time but i realy dont have tha time! And my engineering knowledge only stretches so far as an average halfords employee!?when it comes to electrics and audio issues then i dont have a problem....general maintenance of mechanics is ok for servicing myself but bigger mechanical jobs like this are beyond me!?

I got in touch with sandburns VW/Audi salvage and spares in coventry and they dont have any gearboxes lurking around but is more mail order for them now. dont know wot sorta price i'm looking at rite now though! Any ideas?

Personaly mate i wouldnt buy a second hand gearbox as more than likely it will start givin you the same problems, The best ebt is to get a gargage to remove the gearbox and them to recondition it for you and sort out what ever needssorting init, i cant give you a price as i had a new clutch fitted at the same time and a few other bits which came too 400quid but as i said i ahd other work done, but i would defo recommend getting it reconditioned and then it will belike drivin a new car mate, best money i ever spent, its suprising how much you miss reverse gear HaHa

haha...yeah tel me about it....it was embarrasing earlier as i was in listers VW in coventry earlier and realised i could reverse out the car park....and had to ask for some of the guys to push me out..oops
According to them..its broken teeth that catch reverse gear of which theyr now slipping against hence the spinning whining sound!Cheers for the advice...by the way...how do u get a picture to display below your posts??? cus wen u select the add picture button above it doesnt realy do much but adds like a little bracked with "img" inside!?
