1.6 Driver incresed performance?
« on: 14 November 2007, 20:00 »
have done a few minor things to the engine so far, new webber carb, weighted mk3 shift rod, new dizzy (sparks, leads, oil filter, air filter) and soon to get a new shaft relay bush.

is there any thing else i could do to get some more performance out of the old girl? thinking of fitting an 8v GTI cam, what kind of difference would this make do you think?

any other suggestions/ideas would be muchly appreciated!

thanks

would love a gti mate but my car has no rust on her and totally solid underneath ... the only downside being the salmon pink paint work

i also fitted 1.8 head.....
if u get head work done and jets set up right on carb i see no reason why it cant be as quick as a gti, my old one was up till abt 70 anyway.
that had 1.6 bottom end(should have out 1.8 in)
1.8 head
gti cam
gti manifold and exhaust system
webber carb

Hey, when you fitted the head, what is it you have to do as far as the coolant channel is concerned?

i'd just buy the exhaust system and chuck a cam in..there is no point in spending ages fitting an 8v head with only little return..the exhaust system and cam is a piece of cake and power increases will be seen..imo if you want to go a lot lot faster, you need a bigger motor, end of story.. you could spend hours and hours on a 1.6 for say 3-6hp but what's the point!? do the easy power gains for now and when you can afford insurance/car etc then spend the time and money more wisely, on say a 2ltr 16v 150hp abf engine and slap that in your mk2..you'll be laughin with oh lets say around 175hp per tonne with that beast lol!

Just thought id reiterate this is only my opinion, dnt take it to heart.

hope this helps you in your quest for speed!

im 19 too man with a gti..my mate is 17 with a gti..anything is possible lol! small things are gti cam and exhaust system..that answer your question? and maybe a k&n57i kit will sort a bit more power...also give it a full service as often as you can, makes a hell of a difference to performance having spangly oil and sparks etc!
