WHat size is the nut......
« on: 13 November 2007, 09:20 »
..... that goes on the strut top on a MKII 8v? I'm swapping my suspension over tonight and I don't have any deep reach spaners so I need to pick one up on the way home.

Cheers guys,

Nick

How about a strut nut tool too?http://www.toolbox37.com/acatalog/SUSPENSION_BRAKES_EXHAUST_TOOLS.html

I love the tools you can get from here, hehe. Pipe benders, flare tools....loads of stuff

The new struts don't have a hex head but a flat that needs gripping with an adjustable or monkey wrench so a socket is out of the question.

Think I'll cruise to halfords and buy a deep ring spanner that looks the right size and then try it in the car park. If it's the wrong size I'll go back in and swap for a big/smaller one.

That's for the slotted nut. Don't need to undo or tighten that one as I have complete assembled struts to take off and put on.

Cheers though,

Nick

Oh this just gets worse!

So I went to halfrauds at lunch to get a spanner. They don't do one the right size that reaches down into the pit that is the the strut top. To make matters worse my current shocks have the hex hole in the top. I thought I would check my hex drivers while I was there (they'r ein the boot) and low and behold it's 7mm. What sort of size is that! I don't have one that size!

THese germans are driving me mad!

When I did mine they were so tight I bent loads of allen key bits, didnt slip just bent them.... In the end I used an impact wrench and it came off within seconds without having to hold the middle at all!
