Thanks for all the info. Unfortunately i really want a 3dr and it will have to be an 8v as i cant afford to spend the extra money on insurance/ petrol so neither of those cars are really an option. But thanks though.

I've seen quite a few tidy golfs in sheffield actually. Possibly one of yours. There are two i see quite a lot on eccy road. Both Mk 2s - A white syncro and an oak green slammed one. anyone on here?

ha and secondly - yeah i browse looking at golf golf/ parts all day so when i actually have one, i can see its going to be hard to resist.

All reassuring stuff though, and as long as there are no major repairs i will happily fix and replace the parts i can handle.

previously i had been worried about the milage a bit too much, but i think i will now be able to consider more cars. Need to sell my current joke of a car asap

there's no real difference in fuel comsumption and i don't think th insurance is much different either , but then i'm old so it's all pretty much the same no matter what i drive!

i think the 16v is a group higher than 8v, 13 and 14...i think...

anyhoo, if i were you i'd get an 8v. << hope that helps.

Your red golf is pretty much what i would do my own but i am set on 8v.

on topic  I would not worry about mileage and buy based on overall condition.  Mine has done 192K miles and looks / drives really well.  Plus if you buy one that appears to be in excellent condition with 150 -160K on the clocks you will have plenty of cash left over

I have a white 87' gti 8v with 84k when bought it and now has 87k VWFSH. Paid £625 in Jan 07 and what a joy and is in very good condition for age has a couple of dents usual stuff for a car that is 20 years old. Had one problem that was that it lost 5 gear and found out it was gear selector rod and cost a £5 for part and fixed it myself.

£1500 Should buy a absolute stunner.

So am i right in thinking the biggest killer of these cars rust?

Two of my mates have had their pistons go recently so i am paranoid about that happening.
