Hello chaps, newb here and a ford owner too
« on: 10 November 2007, 18:35 »
But dont flame me yet.. im the man who lives on forums, my mate is the golf obsessive (think hes had about 4 including these) and between us were currently converting a mk2 1.3 to 2.0

He had a wolfsburg mk1 with a 2E 2.0 8v engine in, its had engine work and i think makes about 160bhp, the car had the usual, coil overs, stripped and buckets etc... Sadly he wrote the car off and wants to make use of the engine, so its going into a 1988 mk2 3 door shell which we've baught for the humble sum of £122

So basicaly i just wanted to introduce myself, and sooner or later i want to get my mate on here as its his car, but because i will be helping him with most of the work I will proberly be the one who needs the help, so hopefully you guys wont mind that..

I think most of the help we will need will be with the loom.

Anyways chaps thats my little introduction, i know where the search is and i will use it

Cheers

Jay and Olly

this is copied from edition38.com, however ive decided to join up here and continue the project as this site i think will be able to help me better, no disrespect to edition38, its just more diverse than just golfs :)

Evening chaps... well we started the car today.. went well apart from not getting the 1.3 out, at the moment its just hanging in there :)

just a few pics..

Side by side..

The Crashed mk1 :( she was a beast.

Mk2 Engine Stripped.

The mk1's Engine.

Head Stamp on mk1 Engine

We got so far, but when we attempted to lift the engine out with nothing but a 2x2 beam and a rope.. we realised we wouldent get much ferther than this..

So some time this week were getting a hoist.. it will make it much easier, the waterpump on the 1.3 might have to come off yet but if we can get away with that and the crank pully will stay in place.. less knuckle skinning :)

as far as i can tell the mounting is very different.. can anyone shed any light as to what engine is in the mk1, and where it came from..
if it came from a mk2 then i know it will go in without to much grief.

thats all for now folks, if anyone could help me with the few questions that would be appriciated, cheers, j

ello :)

just a update from today (the second weekend weve worked on the car now) so your all with me on the currant situation.

Ive learnt alot more about both cars now, tbh the work involved seems no different to what ive done on my fiesta, other than i never changed the gearbox..

our situation is this, the mk1 has the 020 gearbox from what i can tell, and it seems that the driveshafts are also the same as the ones in the 1.3, so today we got ourselfs the m8 spline socket, started to undo the driveshaft flange and one of the capheads obviously must have been taken off before, and was partialy eaten out, and i finnished it off :)

so that needs taking out with mole grips or some other way, im not to concerned because its a caphead..

but can anyone help us with getting the engine out, i bolted the block back up to the gearbox today losely so it was supported again, the plan is as follows..

1. get a hoist (we still havent yet, lazy arses)
2. jack the front up and support on axel stands, remove the wheels
3. seperate the wishbone from the hub
4. undo inner cv flange to diff..
5. heres where i need help, does a splined shaft run into the diff? if so how much clearence do we need to pull it out.
6. pull the hub outwards by how ever much is needed to do the above? leaving the outer joint in situ.
7. support the engine and box with the hoist, undo the front and rear gearbox mounting
8. lift the engine out? or drop it to the floor and take it from underneath?

can anyone tell me if im doing anything wrong here? we certainly cant get the engine out without the box, and considering it needs changing for the gti box in the mk1, its gotta come out anyway.

thanks for reading chaps, hope you dont mind helping out i guess you guys are the best ones to ask :)

thanks alot.
jay
