Differance between the 8v and 16v engine?
« on: 08 November 2007, 13:47 »
Sorry if its been asked before but i cant find a thread about it. Is there that big a differance in performance between the gti 8v and the gti 16v? With the petrol gettin stupidly high i'm thinking is the 16v that much more quicker and worth the extra insurance and petrol cost?

if you want power go for 16v whit a few mods

8v is good for cheep insurance

and for fuel a 110 bhp Tdi GL would be the one

OEM(ish) G3GTi 8v5dr

One has 8 valves 4 inlet and 4 exhausts, one has 16 valves 8 inlet and 8 exhausts. Been covered many times, have a use of the search function :)

Probably got lost in the "Great Crash of 08

Just get a 16v, the insurance isn't much more at all and they're worth more when you come to sell it as they're a lot lot rarer than the standard 8v

16v has 150bhp very revvy engine, IG 16
8v has 115bhp (i think) has more low down torque, IG 14.

If petrol costs are your concern get a MK4 GTTDi or an old 306 D-turbo as this is such an each car to tune up and is IG 6. French rubbish though but fun to drive.

The 8vs and 16vs both have their advantages and disadvantages

On the negative side, the 16v uses a little tiny bit more fuel and costs a wee bit more to insure.
On the plus side it's worth more when you come to sell it and it's faster.

On the negative side, the 8v is slower and an affordable fast hot hatch for boy racers so quite a few have been thrashed to hell and back.
On the positive side there are a lot of 8vs in scrap yards which have plenty of spare parts you can fix 16vs with!!

Cheers for the info chaps. Desperatly after another 16v now, black ideally or dark blue, sold another car of mine so have the cash for it, also desperatly have to sell the red 16v i'v got, its my everyday car at the mo but i wanna start spending money on it for mods etc but really cant bring myself to keeping it just because its red! Nothing wrong with red cars mind, just not my cuppa tea and i rushed into it!
